Brunei, located on the island of Borneo, is an absolute monarchy guided by the philosophy of Malay Islamic Monarchy. The same royal dynasty has ruled the country for centuries, and while a constitution exists, the Sultan holds supreme authority. The national flag displays a crescent moon, underscoring this Islamic identity. The monarchy uses revenues from natural gas and petroleum reserves to provide citizens with free healthcare and education through the university level. These oil resources give Brunei one of the highest per capita incomes in Asia. As fossil fuels gradually run dry, the nation is turning toward eco-tourism and finance to sustain economic growth.
Heavily relying on oil exports has created financial risk, as drops in energy prices threaten government spending and job growth. With limited positions in the preferred public sector, many educated young Bruneians move to Australia, Malaysia, or the United Kingdom for career opportunities and choose not to return. Strict laws in Brunei restrict free speech, leading journalists and citizens to censor themselves to avoid penalties for criticizing the Sultan or state policies. The introduction of a Sharia Penal Code alongside civil law has drawn international concern over religious freedom, women’s rights, and personal expression. These legal controls, combined with monitored online activity, leave little room for public debate or political dissent across the country.
Believers make up roughly 8 percent of the population, comprising Chinese, indigenous residents, and foreign workers. Because the law strictly forbids proselytizing and bans the Muslim majority from converting, public evangelism faces heavy legal barriers. Unregistered churches cannot easily import materials or hold open gatherings, and leaving Islam brings severe social and legal consequences. Despite these boundaries, foreign workers quietly share their faith in the workplace. Christian ministries prioritize personal discipleship, online outreach, and training local leaders to build up hidden believers. Through small private gatherings and digital connections, the local Church continues growing steadily while navigating deep-seated legal pressure.
