Pray for Kiribati

Kiribati is the only nation in the world to span all four hemispheres. This beautiful island country is home to turquoise lagoons and flat, sun-drenched beaches. Half of the population lives in the bustling, close-knit community of South Tarawa. After achieving hard-won independence in 1979, Kiribati’s people established a democratic republic. The island’s culture is filled with traditions that have endured despite decades of colonialism. Its heritage is celebrated through rich customs, such as seafaring traditions and traditional dances.

Kiribati is one of the least developed Pacific island nations. The country cannot mass-produce goods or operate  large factories, so it relies almost entirely on exporting coconuts and charging international boats for fishing in its waters. Many people travel abroad for work to financially support their families back home. Foreign aid remains an important source of assistance. Financial hardship and limited access to employment can contribute to social challenges, including alcohol abuse. Additionally, Kiribati’s low-lying atolls make it highly vulnerable to rising sea levels. Climate change threatens freshwater supplies through saltwater contamination, increasing water scarcity.

Though the majority of Kiribati’s population identifies as Christian, cultural Christianity and the influence of false religion hinder genuine fellowship with God. Indigenous beliefs and practices are often combined with Christianity. Personal spiritual growth often fades quickly, when biblical teaching is often neglected. There is a need for revival among the youth and for them to live wholesome lives with godly purpose. Pray for a renewed passion for biblical doctrine and for the people of Kiribati to seek a personal relationship with God.
