Pray for Palau

Every visitor to this nation must sign the “Palau Pledge” — the world’s first immigration pledge requiring tourists to promise to protect the environment. East of the Philippines and north of Indonesia, the islands of Palau are surrounded by a barrier reef that thrives where opposing deep-sea currents push nutrients to the surface, feeding a great variety of marine life. Its population of less than 20,000 is made up of native Micronesians who live alongside significant Filipino and Asian resident communities. Traditional Palauan society is matrilineal, passing land and clan identity through the mother’s family while emphasizing respect for elders, community responsibility, and the authority of local chiefs. Today, Palau maintains a close relationship with the United States, which provides economic assistance and guarantees U.S. defense support.

Despite having higher average incomes than most Pacific island nations, Palau relies heavily on U.S. government grants, tourism, and state employment. Reliance on tourism leaves Palau vulnerable to global recessions, while its narrow economic base makes the country dependent on imports for food and fuel, driving up living costs. Many young Palauans leave for education and employment abroad, creating labor shortages that are increasingly filled by foreign workers. The nation’s reliance on processed imported foods has also contributed to high rates of diabetes. As Palau has become more connected to global tourism and foreign labor, it has faced growing methamphetamine use and labor trafficking. Most trafficking involves vulnerable migrant workers employed in industries like construction and hospitality.

A vast majority of the Palauan population considers itself Christian. Religious leaders are highly respected, and there is strong community participation in the churches, though many identify as Christian because it has become part of Palauan identity and they may have limited engagement with Scripture, church life, or personal faith. Though Modekngei, a native religion, is not widely practiced today, traditional beliefs can still influence worldview, especially regarding spirituality, ancestors, and the supernatural. Because Palau has close ties with the U.S., tourism, and global media, consumerism, individualism, and secularization have crept into the Palauan Church. Nevertheless, every community in Palau has access to churches and Scripture, providing widespread opportunities to hear the Gospel. As migrant communities grow, believers have increasing opportunities to share Christ with their neighbors.
