Often referred to as “Corazón de América” or the “Heart of America,” Paraguay is a diverse and beautiful country located in the center of South America. The landscape ranges from lush forests and fertile plains to the vast, rugged wilderness of the Gran Chaco. Spanish is used for business exchanges while Guaraní is used for conversations between family and friends. Locals often gather to share tereré, a cold-brewed yerba mate, and the nation is shaped by strong community bonds and perseverance. After generations of political turmoil, conflicts, and instability, Paraguay transitioned to a democratic system of government with the adoption of its 1992 constitution.
Despite recent reforms, corruption, money laundering, and drug trafficking undermine Paraguay’s development. As one of South America’s largest producers of illegal cannabis, Paraguay also serves as a transit route for organized crime networks operating between Brazil and Argentina. These criminal activities contribute to violence, corruption, and insecurity. Women experience workplace discrimination, and domestic violence rates are high. Although freedom of expression is protected by law, some journalists and citizens encounter intimidation and political pressure when reporting on corruption or organized crime. Unequal access to quality education, formal employment, and economic opportunities leaves many families trapped in poverty, particularly in rural and Indigenous communities.
Paraguay’s government promotes religious freedom, and a vast majority of the population is Roman Catholic. However, many continue to practice traditional beliefs and cultural rituals alongside Christianity through spiritual connections to nature and honoring ancestors. Some communities influenced by Guaraní culture believe in traditional healing practices and seek guidance and protection from spiritual forces. Though Roman Catholic churches are widespread in urban and rural communities, the small, evangelical Protestant population is primarily found in urban areas. A strong Mennonite presence shapes the western region of the country, where communities have preserved aspects of their German-speaking heritage. Missionaries and local believers are working to establish churches among Paraguay’s Indigenous communities and share the Gospel in culturally meaningful ways.
