People in Thailand are known for not taking life too seriously. Their culture is heavily influenced by Buddhism, which centers on the idea that nothing is permanent, contributing to a laid-back lifestyle. Turquoise waters, beautiful beaches, traditional floating markets, and a rich and friendly culture combine to make Thailand a major tourist destination and travel hub for southeast Asia. The landscape varies from busy cities to rice paddies, tropical forests, and little rural villages. It has developed infrastructure, a relatively low cost of living, and high-quality, affordable healthcare. The nation enjoys a relatively stable and industrialized economy.
Thailand means “land of the free,” yet it is home to many who live in bondage. Sex trafficking, drugs, and organized crime are widespread. Thailand is widely recognized as a source and destination for human trafficking and sex tourism, and it is estimated that 400,000 people live in slavery. The nation also lacks many civil liberties and political rights. Freedom of expression is restricted, and the elections have been criticized for not being free or fair. Thailand is not currently in armed conflict with Cambodia, but tension remains after a 2025 ceasefire. Hundreds of thousands of civilians have been displaced because of the conflict.
86 percent of Thailand is unreached with the Gospel. Even after centuries of active missions efforts, only 2 percent of the nation is Christian. Many Thai people are bound to an intricate belief system that mixes Buddhism with folk spiritual practices. Towering golden Buddha figures and sparkling Buddhist temples draw the eyes of many and demonstrate Thailand’s deep spirituality. Many Families expect at least one son to become a Buddhist monk to attain merit. In Thai culture, Buddhism is widely viewed as a heritage that a person is born into rather than a theological choice. Christianity is viewed as a Western, foreign religion, and those who are ethnically Thai often face social pressure when they convert to Christianity. Thailand has one of the highest religious retention rates, and almost 98 percent of the population remains in the religion in which they were raised.
