About Vanuatu

Vanuatu once ranked as one of the happiest places on Earth according to the Happy Planet Index. The nation is composed of over 80 islands in the Southwest Pacific. Its pristine beaches, mountainous tropical rainforests, and active volcanoes draw many to its shores. Beyond the sunlit beaches and well-traveled tourist hotspots, remote rural communities in Vanuatu preserve traditional ways of life, where families tend gardens of taro and yams, fish from turquoise lagoons, and share ancestral stories and customs. The indigenous ni-Vanuatu people make up the vast majority of the population, and more than 100 languages are spoken across the nation.

Despite ranking high on the Happy Planet Index for its strong family bonds, long life expectancy, and stewardship of natural resources, Vanuatu is one of the poorest nations in the Pacific. Rising seas, coastal erosion, and cyclones threaten its islands and communities, especially the food supply and livelihoods of ni-Vanuatu people, who depend on crops to feed their families. High transportation costs and limited roads, services, and business resources slow trade and production rates. Rural and remote communities, especially on the outer islands, lack access to well-equipped schools, trained teachers, and consistent healthcare services.

Christianity has played a major role in Vanuatu’s development, reflected in the nation’s motto, “In God We Stand.” Today, over 90 percent of the population claims Christianity, and churches are vital to the nation’s education, healthcare, and governance. In 2006, Christian leaders and government officials participated in a national service of repentance and dedication to the Lord. There is a small number of Mormons, Baha’i, and Muslims, and many Christians mix traditional beliefs with their faith, honoring ancestors through ceremonies, prayers, or offerings. Pray for a deep understanding of the Gospel and protection from false teachings.
