Pray for Japan

Japan blends an ancient civilization’s traditions with a modern culture. Skyscrapers mix with ancient temples and beautiful cherry blossom trees to form a fascinating landscape that enthralls visitors from around the world. Japan has been a leader in technology and manufactured consumer goods for decades, especially electronics and automobiles. In what is known as the “Japanese economic miracle,” the nation achieved remarkable growth after the devastation of World War II, becoming one of the largest economies in the world. Japan also boasts one of the highest life expectancies. After the war, the country redefined itself by pacifism and democracy, abandoning its focus on military dominance. It now prioritizes peace and is involved in international peacekeeping initiatives.

Japan’s aging population and low birth rate are shrinking the workforce and straining the social security system. Nearly 30 percent of the population is over 65, and the fertility rate is 1.14 children per woman, which is well below the rate needed for a stable population. This is one of the lowest fertility rates in the world. The suicide rate has declined since the early 2000s, but it is still higher than in many other developed countries, owing to widespread loneliness and isolation. The Japanese islands are also heavily affected by typhoons, floods, heat waves, earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions.

Despite its freedom of religion, Japan is one of the least-evangelized nations. Around 65 percent of Japanese are non-religious, but the people are spiritually hungry. Spiritual practices are deeply woven into the culture, especially temple idol worship and ancestor veneration. The people are searching for truth, but they need someone to point them in the right direction. Shinto and Buddhism are the most popular religions, and many even mix the two or include other spiritual practices. Only about one percent identify as Christian, and a small number of people are responding to the Gospel. Only a move of God will bring spiritual breakthrough.
