Pray for Georgia

Ruled by the Ancient Persian Empire, conquered by the Mongols, battled over by the Ottomans, and dominated by the Soviet Union, Georgia has been caught in the crosshairs of great powers for 3,000 years. Throughout centuries of oppression, Georgians clung to their identity, and their culture can still be traced through history. Its people speak the language of their ancestors, Georgian, and still use their own unique alphabet. Georgia remains a Christian nation even though most of its neighbors have been Muslim since the seventh century. One theory holds that the name “Georgia” comes from the Greek word for farmer, fitting for its agricultural society. Besides farming, Georgia’s location between Europe and Asia has made it an important route for gas pipelines and railroads.

Georgia once received international praise for its anti-corruption efforts, but praise has turned to criticism as democratic processes have deteriorated in recent years. The 2024 parliamentary elections were widely criticized by international observers over serious flaws in the voting process. Political leaders were imprisoned, journalists continue to be monitored, and protests are silenced. Since 2008, Georgia has also dealt with Russian aggression. Twenty percent of Georgia’s territory is under Russian occupation in the northern regions. Political instability combined with high unemployment has driven young people to seek a better life in other countries. Mental health issues, including anxiety and depression, are increasing among young Georgians.

Georgia is considered the world’s second-oldest Christian nation. The Georgian Orthodox Church took root in the early centuries of Christianity, which became the state religion in the fourth century. The Church in Georgia was seriously oppressed by the Soviet Union. Ancient churches were either destroyed or converted into military depots and grain warehouses, and Christians were martyred. Since the fall of communism, many Georgians have returned to church, but nominal faith is widespread. As a result, Muslim minorities in Georgia remain largely unreached. However, there are signs of renewed life and growth in the Church as passionate believers plant new churches and bring others to Christ.
