Slovakia’s ice caves, hundreds of castles, and medieval streets are nestled in the rugged Tatra Mountains of Central Europe. This landlocked nation is adorned with forests full of bears and wolves, plains that cultivate agriculture, and vineyards in historic wine villages. Slovakia was influenced by the Soviet Union and followed communist ideologies and Soviet-modeled political leadership until 1989. In 1993, Czechoslovakia split into Slovakia and the Czech Republic in a peaceful settlement known as the “Velvet Divorce.” In spite of being occupied by various empires and Nazi Germany, Slovak national pride helped preserve a unique language and history that continue to thrive today. Folk traditions such as embroidered clothing, the fujara (the shepherd’s flute), and village festivals define Slovakian culture.
Slovakia is a high-income country supported by automotive production, technology, and farming. But wealth is concentrated in western Slovakia and Bratislava, leaving eastern and rural regions susceptible to poverty. Though the nation’s unemployment rates are relatively low, young people, as well as rural and eastern communities, have difficulty finding employment. Inequality is particularly strong in socially excluded Romani communities. The Roma people are Slovakia’s largest ethnic minority and have limited access to healthcare, education, and job opportunities. Anti-Roma prejudices are widespread, and many have been abused or persecuted by law enforcement. Though Romani culture contributes to Slovakia’s folk music, arts and crafts, festivals, and oral traditions, their role is often undervalued and ignored.
Alongside the rise of modernization, Slovakia has fallen into spiritual stagnation. More than 90 percent of the nation identifies as Christian, yet church attendance is diminishing and Christianity is more cultural than personal. The nation is primarily Roman Catholic, though church planting efforts are increasing Protestant and evangelical denominations. Romani communities are also primarily Roman Catholic, but some blend Christianity with fortune-telling traditions and healing practices. Social exclusion creates barriers for Roma people to access biblical teaching, but Christ’s love can overcome ethnic divisions. Pray for widespread revival and for walls between communities to be torn down.
