Pray for Northern Ireland

A nation of rolling green hills and rugged coastlines, Northern Ireland is well known for its natural beauty. C. S. Lewis is widely believed to have been inspired by the Mourne Mountains to write the Chronicles of Narnia, having once remarked that if giants existed, they would live among its great, green ridges. The Northern Irish live in bustling cities like Belfast and quiet rural villages like Culmore. Northern Ireland once had some of the world’s largest shipyards, employing over 35,000 workers to build ships, including the Titanic. Now, most Northern Irishmen work in markets like healthcare, education, and government. After Saint Patrick first brought Christianity to Ireland in the 400s, the island enjoyed centuries of Roman Catholic heritage. But as Protestants from Britain settled in northeastern Ireland over the centuries, tensions grew between Protestants and Catholics. Thirty years of unrest, known as “the Troubles,” caused great suffering in the late 1900s.

Tall barriers called “peace walls,” built during the Troubles to separate Protestant and Catholic neighborhoods, still stand. Families are still seeking answers about loved ones who were killed or disappeared during the conflict. Thousands are left with lingering trauma. Many from younger generations see little hope for Northern Ireland’s future, and roughly half of them have indicated they want to move to another country to find better opportunities. The Protestant-Catholic divide continues to fuel political disagreements over the nation’s identity. Protestants want their country to remain a part of the United Kingdom (UK), but Catholics want Northern Ireland to separate and join the Republic of Ireland. A divided national government constantly struggles to take action, stalling economic reforms and leaving local communities without stable leadership.

Although Northern Irishmen were willing to fight one another because of religious identity, many do not truly understand what Christianity is about. For most, being Catholic or Protestant is a way to associate with their local community rather than with Jesus. As in much of the West, Northern Ireland is becoming less religious, and church attendance is declining. The pain and bitterness left by religious conflict hinders the spread of the Gospel. Still, there are numerous churches in the region that serve their communities and are pointing people to Christ. Northern Ireland has some of the highest concentrations of evangelical churches and mission-sending organizations in the UK. Pray that these Christians would bring God’s healing to their country and the world.
