Pray for Antigua and Barbuda

Known for world-class cricket and 365 white-sand beaches, Antigua and Barbuda are two neighboring islands in the Eastern Caribbean. After centuries under British rule, the country gained its independence in 1981, remaining part of the Commonwealth with the British monarch as head of state. Stone sugar mill ruins across the island still serve as reminders of its former plantation economy. Every year, the nation holds the August Carnival, celebrating emancipation through steelband competitions, Calypso music, and street parades. In 2025, Parliament replaced the oath to the British monarch with a pledge to its own country and laws. The population is mostly of African descent, alongside minority populations of European, East Indian, and mixed descent.

Antigua and Barbuda has a strong economy, but it is quick to feel the effects of sudden changes in global fuel prices and travel trends. Tourism drives most of the national income and jobs, putting it at risk during global recessions and health crises. Limited freshwater forces these islands to rely on expensive desalination plants during droughts, while dependence on imported food and fuel raises daily living costs when global prices rise. Strong Atlantic storms and rising sea levels threaten coastal towns. Located between North and South America, the nation also serves as a transit point for drug smuggling, though violent crime stays lower than in neighboring countries. Meanwhile, a lack of stable jobs drives educated young people to leave the country.

The vast majority of the population is Christian, with Roman Catholics making up 8–10 percent alongside a large Protestant community. Smaller religious minorities include Rastafarians, Bahá’ís, and Muslims. Historically, the Moravian and Methodist churches played a key role in educating enslaved people and pushing for full emancipation in 1834. For most of the nation’s history, local churches operated as colonial institutions with strong ties to England. Since independence, churches have embraced their local culture, incorporating native music traditions into their worship. Today, congregations benefit from strong religious freedom and remain deeply active in civic life by operating schools, family ministries, and youth outreach. Even so, church leaders struggle with passive membership, secular trends, and declining attendance. In response, local evangelical organizations are prioritizing youth discipleship, while student ministries across the islands are building closer partnerships to unify their efforts.
