Angola spans dense northern rainforests, dry southern savannas, coastal beaches, and mountain waterfalls. Rich in natural resources, it is one of Africa’s largest producers of oil. Angolan society is centered around family, and people live in close community with their extended relatives. The capital city of Luanda is highly urbanized, with a high cost of living, while many rural areas lack reliable roads, clean water, and power, which creates a high economic gap between the rich and the poor. The nation’s history is marked by division and conflict. It gained independence in 1975, which was immediately followed by a 27-year civil war, ending in 2002.
More than two decades later, the nation is still recovering from the war. It claimed many lives and displaced millions, leaving many children orphaned. Forty-five percent of the population is under fifteen, and many of them are malnourished, which has prevented their growth. Many did not receive proper education during the war, and well over a million children are still out of school. Girls are particularly vulnerable to the nation’s hardships. Around a quarter of them married before the age of 18 and many experience sexual violence. The nation was covered in landmines during the war, and significant progress has been made to remove them, but some remain. Additionally, the government severely restricts civil liberties and political rights, raising concerns about the fairness of elections. The healthcare system is also significantly underdeveloped, with many suffering from HIV/AIDS, cholera, and malaria.
Biblical Christianity has grown significantly since the end of the civil war. Today, over 90 percent of the population identifies as Christian, and evangelical Christianity represents about 23 percent of the population. Still, about half of the languages in Angola do not have a complete Bible translation. Many believe in witchcraft, even professing Christians. Churches often blend biblical teaching with false doctrine from traditional African beliefs involving spirits, ancestors, healing practices, and protective objects. In poverty, people often turn to witchcraft to fulfill their material needs rather than seeking Christ and resting in His fulfillment of their spiritual needs.
