About Solomon Islands

In 1568, Spanish explorer Álvaro de Mendaña de Neira discovered gold on an island east of Papua New Guinea. Believing the land was the legendary biblical source of King Solomon’s gold, he named it the “The Isles of Solomon.” The islands’ treasures go far beyond just gold: hibiscus flowers line the roads, filling the humid air with a sweet fragrance. Village life is highly communal, and neighbors share meals and protect those in their clan. The island has a wealth of fish, forestry, and untapped minerals. Many of its industries are foreign-owned, and its economy relies on fishing and timber exports. The nation also maintains strong ties with China, its largest trading partner, which has funded major local projects and built a bustling Chinatown in the capital.

For years, political tensions have been rising. The province of Malaita has long accused the national government in Honiara of neglecting their island’s development and infrastructure. When the nation cut ties with Taiwan — a close supporter of the Malaita Province — and partnered with China instead in 2019, these disputes boiled over. Hordes of upset citizens rioted in the capital, burning down government buildings and the city’s Chinatown. While peace has since been restored, these underlying political divisions remain a constant threat to stability. On a daily level, poverty is a major concern, particularly in remote villages where families struggle with very limited access to basic services.

Over the past century, Christianity has experienced immense growth, rising from 30 percent of the population to over 95 percent. Today, the Church acts as a powerful unifying force and plays a key role in helping people reconcile during times of political and ethnic conflict. Even so, local Christian leaders face spiritual challenges. While most people have heard the Gospel, progress in translating the Bible into indigenous languages is slow. Many people practice a shallow or nominal faith, and in some areas, traditional beliefs in ancestral spirits and ancient magic persist alongside Christian teachings. To strengthen the Church, Christian organizations are providing deeper, biblical discipleship and training new leaders. They also work hard to reach the country’s most isolated communities, building a lasting foundation of faith that guides daily life.
