Isolated by the towering Himalayas in South Asia, Bhutan was refined by traditions of etiquette and respect and has been deeply shaped by Buddhist culture. Known as the “Land of the Thunder Dragon,” this remote nation was generally cut off from other nations until the 1960s, when opening trade with neighboring India sparked social and political modernization. Since then, Bhutan has paved its roads, abolished slavery, eliminated the caste system, and successfully transitioned from an absolute monarchy to a democratic constitutional monarchy. To measure its true success, Bhutan created the Gross National Happiness index, prioritizing the health, culture, and happiness of its people over purely economic growth.
Although many young citizens complete secondary school or university, the job market lacks sufficient skilled positions, leaving educated graduates struggling to find suitable employment. Many young Bhutanese emigrate to Australia, Canada, and other countries, seeking higher-paying jobs and educational opportunities, creating labor shortages at home. The national economy is heavily reliant on public-sector jobs and hydropower exports, leaving it vulnerable to outside financial shocks. Ethnic Nepali communities face ongoing discrimination, often struggling to obtain official clearances needed to start businesses, obtain government jobs, or receive passports.
Vajrayana Buddhism is practiced by approximately 75 percent of the population. While Bhutan’s constitution protects personal freedom of belief, strict government regulations restrict religious organizations and proselytizing. Because Christian churches are generally unable to obtain official registration, most believers gather quietly in private homes. Despite high levels of social and family pressure against those converting from Buddhism, the Christian community is growing. With restrictions on foreign missionary activity, ministry primarily occurs through local believers cultivating personal relationships with their unbelieving neighbors. Bible translation and digital Scripture resources are also increasing access to God’s Word in local languages. Praise God that the Gospel is taking root in this Himalayan nation!
