About the Resilience of the Middle Eastern and North African Church

Centuries of unimaginable hardship have yielded devastation across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Entire people groups are displaced by civil war. Massive earthquakes reduce buildings to rubble. Airstrikes tear through cities, raining fire and debris. Shopkeepers abandon their livelihood in the wake of economic collapse. Entire communities are torn apart by violence and injustice. Groups like Hezbellah, Hamas, ISIS, and Boko Haram unleash terror on the Christian Church. Yet Christians are not without hope.

Their faith is resilient. They gather to pray, to worship, sometimes in secret. Where sharing of their faith is outlawed, Christians find creative ways to evangelize. They pray for wisdom and turn to the global Church for support. Even in suffering, the Church endures (Romans 5:3). In Iran — said to have the fastest-growing church in the world — vast amounts of people are coming to know Christ. Throughout the MENA region, former Muslims are placing their faith in Jesus despite the threat of persecution.

As nations rage, the Church holds onto hope in God. Though the earth gives way and mountains shake beneath their feet, the Lord of hosts is with them (Psalm 46:2, 6–7). Iran’s rapidly growing church is just one piece of evidence that God is working and His Spirit is active across MENA.

Our prayer is for the peoples and nations of MENA to find their rest in God. He alone is able.
