True to its nickname, the “Warm Heart of Africa,” Malawi is defined by the genuine kindness and welcoming spirit of its people. The nation is landlocked in southeastern Africa, yet about 20 percent of Malawi’s territory is covered by water. The sandy lake shores match the beauty of tropical ocean beaches. Lake Nyasa, the third-largest lake in Africa, is home to fish species found nowhere else in the world. Beyond these natural wonders, the small nation is also one of the most densely populated in Africa, with over 80 percent of its people living in rural villages. Malawi has significant freshwater resources, farmable land, forests, and mineral potential.
Despite these resources, Malawi remains one of the least developed countries in the world. In the 1960s and 70s, agriculture and infrastructure expanded, but growth soon reversed as Hastings Banda assumed authoritarian control. His dictatorship dissolved in 1994, leaving behind corrupt policies, water shortages, poor roads, unreliable electricity, and limited phone and internet services. Government officials have been accused of bribery, abuse of power, and misuse of funds. Population growth further limits available resources. Widespread poverty and job scarcity leave many families trapped by chronic food insecurity, a crisis compounded by the heavy toll of malaria and HIV.
Despite these many adversities, the Church is growing. More than three-fourths of the population claim to be Christian. The majority are Protestant, and a small number are Roman Catholic. Bible distribution efforts have carried the Word of God into nearly every corner of society. Since severe poverty makes formal education a luxury, many aspiring pastors cannot access theological training. There is a critical need for solid biblical teaching and mature leaders to disciple the next generation. Still, the nation is rich in spiritual wealth. In the face of earthly suffering, God is calling Malawians for His glory, and they are answering Him.
