About Sint Maarten

The vibrant parades and elaborate costumes of the Sint Maarten Carnival attract visitors from across the Caribbean and around the world. Tourism is the backbone of the island’s economy, contributing about 80 percent of its gross domestic product. Sint Maarten is divided between two nations. The northern half, Saint Martin, is an overseas collectivity of France, while the southern half, Sint Maarten, the smallest island in the world, is a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The island is known for its white-sand beaches, rolling limestone and volcanic hills, and lush upland landscapes.

To sustain its tourism industry, Sint Maarten has a vibrant nightlife. While its French neighbor, Saint Martin, is known for its restaurants, Sint Maarten is known for its casinos and nightclubs. A culture centered on pleasure that boosts tourism also challenges the spiritual lives of believers in Sint Maarten. Reliance on tourism makes the territory vulnerable, as jobs are limited to one sector or industry. While the territory itself is high-income, many residents struggle to afford the high cost of living. Financial instability and inequality are common issues, as wealth generated by tourism is unevenly distributed.

Despite cultural influences, Sint Maarten is predominantly Christian. Christian programming is broadcast on radio and television in different languages. The Bible is available in Papiamentu, English, and Dutch. Still, there is strong evidence of superstition and cultural Christianity, which can hinder genuine faith in the Church. The Gospel is often mixed with Caribbean practices such as traditional healing, ancestor worship, and spiritism. Pray for believers in Sint Maarten to build a culture based on genuine faith rather than false religion.
