Pray for Aruba

In 1824, a 12-year-old shepherd discovered gold in the dry Aruban hills, sparking a rush that transformed the quiet island into a miner’s paradise. For nearly a century, fortune seekers worked the rugged terrain, unearthing thousands of pounds of gold before the mines finally ran dry. Since then, Aruba has continuously reinvented itself, shifting from gold mining to oil refining, and ultimately to tourism. Today, visitors love its white-sand beaches, hotel resorts, temperate weather, and relative safety from hurricanes. Thanks to tourism, centuries of trade, Dutch history, and proximity to Latin America, many Arubans naturally speak four languages: Papiamento, Dutch, Spanish, and English. Part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Aruba has a Governor who represents the Dutch monarch, while a locally-elected Prime Minister handles local affairs.

Because Aruba sits just 18 miles from Venezuela, more than a third of its residents are foreign-born. The island hosts one of the world’s highest numbers of Venezuelan refugees per capita, alongside many Colombian immigrants, which puts stress on local housing and public services. Its location makes Aruba a transit point for drug smuggling, fueling organized crime and money laundering. Aruba enjoys a high income, but its reliance on tourism makes it vulnerable to global crises like recessions. The island imports almost all of its food, goods, and energy, driving up the cost of living, though the government is actively investing in alternative energy sources to lower fuel costs. Family structures are also strained, with declining marriage rates and increasing divorce rates, and a majority of children are born outside of wedlock.

The vast majority of Arubans identify as Christian, with most belonging to the Roman Catholic Church. Active radio ministries broadcast across the region in Papiamento, Dutch, English, and Spanish, alongside international networks like Trans World Radio. Local churches have increasing opportunities to minister to many people groups without leaving the island, supporting migrants through food drives, outreach, and spiritual care. Targeted youth programs also work to engage young people facing secular influences and substance abuse. Even with this presence, churches are weakened by religious nominalism, where many people identify as Christian out of tradition rather than practicing an active, personal faith.
