About Austria

Landlocked in central Europe, Austria has shaped Western philosophy, art, and classical music, the Austrian names Mozart, Schubert, Freud, Wittgenstein, and Klimt known internationally for their accomplishments. The beautiful scenery of the Eastern Alps and Danube River Valley in Austria attracts tourists from all over the world. The Habsburg dynasty ruled for six centuries, establishing Vienna as a European capital of arts and politics. Today, Vienna hosts a major United Nations headquarters, and Austria sits at the center of trade routes connecting Eastern and Western European markets. Since declaring constitutional neutrality in 1955, Austria has maintained economic growth, a high standard of living, and a policy of neutrality.

While their nation is economically stable, public health data shows that many Austrians still face significant struggles with substance abuse and mental health. Suicide rates are high, especially among men, and many suffer from alcohol and nicotine addiction. High living costs and inflation create financial pressures, and many families are left without assistance. Austria has tightened its asylum regulations for refugees arriving from conflict zones like Ukraine, Syria, and Afghanistan. Government policies restrict family reunification and lack specific support frameworks for asylum-seeking minors. Anti-Muslim hate crimes and antisemitism are on the rise.

Austria’s capital, Vienna, was also once the capital of the Holy Roman Empire, and Roman Catholicism is still the main religion. Roughly 60 percent of the population identify as Christian, and along with the Catholic majority, there is a small presence of Protestant and Orthodox Christians. Austria has thousands of Catholic churches, shrines, and monasteries, but attendance has dropped as the nation secularizes, falling even lower after reports of sex scandals within the Catholic Church. Immigration has brought a growing Muslim community to Austria, giving believers new opportunities for outreach to both nominal locals and to their Muslim neighbors.
