About Curacao
Curaçao is famous worldwide for its bright blue drink, crafted from the island’s unique bitter oranges. The island’s hotels, casinos, and restaurants draw in tourists from around the world, and tourism accounts for a vast majority of the nation’s economic wealth, creating one of the highest standards of living in the Caribbean. Despite being an island, Curaçao has a mild, semi-dry climate. During its wet season, brief rain supports vibrant desert plants across the nation.
Tourism is one of Curaçao’s biggest industries, but this also makes the island vulnerable to global events like pandemics and economic downturns. Because of its location near Venezuela and major Caribbean shipping routes, Curaçao is sometimes used as a transit point for illegal drug trafficking, especially cocaine. The island has also welcomed many Venezuelans fleeing economic hardship and political instability. Some have applied for asylum, while others have been detained or deported. Human rights organizations have expressed concern about the treatment of some migrants, including conditions in detention centers and access to fair asylum procedures.
The majority of Curaçao’s population identifies as Christian, with most belonging to the Roman Catholic Church. As in much of Latin America, Pentecostal churches have grown steadily since the 1970s. Curaçao is also home to the oldest active Jewish congregation and longest continuously used synagogue in the Americas. Despite a history of religious freedom, cultural Christianity and superstition cause widespread misunderstanding of the Gospel message. Bible literacy and Spirit-led discipleship are key to renewing the Church.
