Pray for Gaza Strip and West Bank

West of Syria and Jordan lie two of the most contested areas in the world: the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The West Bank borders the Dead Sea with historic locations like Jericho and Jesus’ birthplace, Bethlehem. Gaza sits along the Mediterranean coast, bordering Egypt. For Palestinians, identity is deeply rooted in the land, filled with historic villages and olive trees. Although physically separated, both regions form the contested Palestinian territories. Since the formation of the State of Israel in 1948, Palestinian life has been dominated by conflicts and war. For many children, the instability of military conflict is all they’ve ever known.

Both Israelis and Palestinians lay claim to the same historic land, creating decades of deep mistrust and severe security disputes that make peace extremely difficult to reach. The region suffered a major escalation when Hamas launched an attack into Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking roughly 250 hostages. In response, Israel launched a massive military campaign aimed at destroying Hamas. This ongoing war has devastated much of Gaza, displacing millions and causing severe shortages of food, clean water, and shelter. Dangerous conditions have also made Gaza one of the deadliest places on Earth for humanitarian aid workers trying to help.

Facing constant pressure and persecution from both radical Islamists and Israelis, Palestinian Christians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank are often caught in the crossfire. Hostility from both Israelis and Palestinians, combined with a lack of economic opportunities, has pushed many Arab Christians to leave. As a result, this already small minority has dwindled to roughly 2.5 percent of the population. The Church gives a taste of the true unity the region longs for. Jewish and Muslim background Christians, Arab and Israeli, national and expatriate, all come together in joint worship of Jesus Christ. On the day of Hamas’s attack in Israel, Arab and Jewish pastors wept together for their nations. In wartime, the message of the Gospel is more urgent than ever. Many Christian organizations are providing food, medical care, and trauma counseling to those affected by the war. Others are voices of reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians, working to make the Prince of Peace known to the entire nation.
