Pray for Nauru

Home to just over 10,000 people, Nauru is the world’s smallest republic, covering only 8.1 square miles. Although relatively isolated in the Pacific, its closest neighbor is Kiribati. When British sea captain John Fearn first sighted the island in 1798, he named it “Pleasant Island” because of its attractive appearance and the warm reception he received. Surrounded by crystal-clear waters, coral beaches, and swaying palm trees, Nauru is strikingly beautiful. In the early 20th century, phosphate mining became the foundation of the nation’s economy. However, the extensive mining of nearly four-fifths of the island came at a tremendous environmental cost. As phosphate reserves declined, offshore banking emerged as a temporary source of wealth.

After phosphate mines dried up, Nauru lost its main source of income. This crisis was worsened by money-laundering concerns and the closure of offshore banks, leaving the nation with heavy debt. Though the economy has recovered and official unemployment is low, many people rely on government jobs, foreign aid, or work programs overseas to make a living. Nauru is also vulnerable to drought. Because the nation has no rivers or streams, the island relies on rainwater collection and expensive processes that turn ocean water into fresh drinking water. Decades of phosphate mining also destroyed local farmland, forcing residents to rely almost entirely on cheap, imported processed foods. As a result, Nauru has some of the highest obesity and diabetes rates in the world, putting immense strain on its healthcare system.

The national expression, “God’s Will First,” reflects the nation’s religious roots. The first Protestant evangelist arrived on the island in 1899, and a Roman Catholic missionary arrived shortly after. Today, more than half of the nation is Protestant, and one-third is Roman Catholic. As the economy struggles, many are seeking answers, and churches are growing. The Bible has been translated into Nauruan, giving the island the opportunity to hear of salvation found in Jesus and His work on the cross.
