Renowned for its exceptional quality of life, the Republic of Finland ranks among the world’s safest, cleanest, and most prosperous nations. The land is draped with lush forests and speckled with thousands of lakes, and the people take full advantage of the beautiful nature around them. Finns are drawn to the outdoors — hiking, swimming, and fishing. Northern Finland is enveloped in cold, subarctic temperatures, while the remainder of Finland generally experiences the four seasons. It is one of the world’s most peaceful and affluent nations and is considered to have one of the most qualified workforces in the world because of the government’s focus on education, training, and research. Finland is known for protecting its citizens’ rights and personal freedoms, with high levels of public trust. Culturally, Finnish society places a strong emphasis on equality and humility.
However, Finland has its challenges. One of the biggest concerns is the aging population. Almost a quarter of the population is over 65, and the fertility rate is well below the replacement rate of 2.1. This threatens the labor supply, government funding, and long-term economic growth. At the same time, public health concerns are intensifying: over a quarter of the population has used illicit drugs, reflecting a significant increase over the last three decades. Finland also records relatively high rates of sexual violence, mental health struggles, and suicide.
A majority of people in Finland identify themselves as Christians. Finland has a long history of sending missionaries to all nations, specifically the unevangelized world and the former Soviet Union nations. Thanks to its shared border and location, Finland was uniquely positioned to bring the Gospel to post-Soviet nations as soon as religious restrictions were lifted. However, that access is more limited now because of conflict and tensions between Russia and eastern European nations. Many Finns belong to the Lutheran Church of Finland, but regular attendance is low, and membership has declined significantly over the last two decades. Meanwhile, some churches are adopting a secularized view of the Gospel.
