Pray for Spain

Every July, thousands of people from around the world gather in Spain to race through narrow streets alongside charging bulls. Yet everyday Spanish life moves at a much slower pace. From flamenco music and dance to foods like tapas and paella, Spanish culture revolves around family and the enjoyment of life. Long after a meal is finished, Spaniards linger at the table for the unhurried conversation of sobremesa. Strong regional identities, especially in Catalonia and the Basque Country, have fueled decades of debates over independence. Spain is also a crossroads between Europe, Africa, and the Mediterranean world. Just 14km (9 miles) from Africa, it is bordered by both the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Though it ruled the seas for centuries, Spain declined as England rose in power, later enduring a harsh dictatorship in the 20th century. Following the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975, the nation embraced democracy. and joined the European Union, bringing in a new era of economic prosperity.

While Spain’s economy has shown resilience amid global crises, it has long struggled with one of the European Union’s highest unemployment rates, particularly among young adults. Combined with rising housing costs, this has made it difficult for many young Spaniards to find stable work and afford homes. Spain also faces a shrinking workforce due to one of Europe’s lowest fertility rates and an aging population, with more than 20 percent of citizens over age 65. Immigration is helping offset these demographic challenges, as Spain receives large numbers of immigrants from Morocco, Colombia, Venezuela, and other nations. However, rapid population growth has increased pressure on housing, healthcare, schools, and social services in some communities. Recent arrivals often face additional barriers, including language differences, discrimination, and vulnerability to labor and sex trafficking.

For centuries, Roman Catholicism was closely tied to Spanish national identity. From the Spanish Inquisition to General Franco’s regime, Catholicism held a privileged place in Spanish society and government. After Franco’s death, religious freedom expanded, and Spain experienced rapid secularization. While Catholic traditions and holidays are still woven into Spanish culture, church attendance has declined, and many Spaniards have become skeptical of organized religion. Evangelicals are a tiny minority, though urban church plants have grown with immigrant communities from Latin America, Africa, and Eastern Europe. Ministries are also engaging in social outreach and cross-cultural work among Spain’s growing Moroccan Muslim population.
