The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), known until 1997 as Zaire, is roughly one-quarter the size of the United States and home to over 68 million people. Its lush jungles and mountainous landscape are extremely rich in natural resources.
Yet against this backdrop, the DR Congo has experienced the world’s deadliest conflict since World War II, with violence and unrest beginning in 1996 and continuing, in varying degrees, to the present day.
