Few nations have captured the world’s imagination like France. For centuries, artists have found inspiration in the romantic silhouette of the Eiffel Tower, the timeless streets of Paris, and a culinary craft built on fresh baguettes, flaky croissants, and an array of cheeses. The nation’s beauty has inspired artists like Monet, Degas, and Matisse. France’s art, fashion, and beautiful cathedrals make it one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. Immigrant communities from Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal, Mali, and Côte d’Ivoire make up a significant part of French society. The nation has inspired reform and revolutionary ideals throughout history, and it is a leading member of the European Union. As one of the largest economies in the world, its welfare policies have led to high-quality healthcare services and widely accessible education.
However, economic reform is a major catalyst for protests and strikes as people voice concerns about issues like raising the retirement age, inequality, and workers’ rights. France is home to around six million Muslims, many of whom face higher unemployment and educational barriers due to discrimination. Muslim populations are concentrated into specific communities, creating social divides. An increase in violent Islamic terrorist attacks in France has escalated tensions between French people and their Muslim neighbors. Law enforcement tends to discriminate against Arab, Black, and North African citizens, questioning them at train stations and shopping centers. Rising living costs, debates over immigration and national identity, and concerns about safety are shaping elections and political affiliations.
Although more than half the population identifies as Roman Catholic, very few are practicing. Because France strictly separates religion from public life, many people view organized religion with distrust. In this mostly non-religious nation, Evangelical Christians account for only about one percent of the population. The nation has been influential in existential and post-modern philosophies, leaving many seeking meaning and purpose. This search for meaning has also led some to seek and find Christ, and dozens of churches are planted each year. Pray that people would seek personal relationships with the living God and demonstrate Christ’s love to their neighbors.
