Known as the “Land of Volcanoes,” El Salvador’s Central American landscape is shaped by striking volcanic peaks, lush green mountains, and world-class surfing beaches. It is the most densely populated nation in Central America, home to about 6.5 million people who are known for their warm hospitality, vibrant culture, and famous handmade corn flatbreads, pupusas. Though the smallest country in Central America, El Salvador has built a diversified, bustling economy. At first, its coffee, grown in volcanic mountain ranges, was the backbone of its economy and a major export. While coffee still holds a special place in the hearts of visitors and locals alike, the nation has shifted toward manufacturing, services, and tourism.
For decades, El Salvador was completely overshadowed by extreme gang violence, with the highest homicide rate in the world in 2015. In 2022, massive government crackdowns swept thousands of suspected gang members into prisons, but many worry this newfound safety came at the cost of democracy. There are rising concerns about arbitrary arrests, restrictions on the press, and reports of mistreatment inside prisons. While overall poverty has gradually declined, many Salvadorans remain economically vulnerable, especially in rural communities. Today, nearly a quarter of the nation’s economy relies on remittances — money sent home by parents working abroad to help their families survive. In the poorest areas, some families are forced to build homes out of discarded cardboard and sheet metal.
Today, El Salvador has one of the largest evangelical populations in Latin America, with nearly half of its citizens identifying as evangelical Christians. Across the country, local and Indigenous leaders are stepping up to plant new churches in neighborhoods heavily affected by poverty and past violence. Believers are actively serving their communities through youth programs, prison ministries, and dedicated prayer, and churches are even sending missionaries to other countries in Latin America. Besides this, Catholic organizations are establishing many schools and hospitals throughout the country. At times, this work is challenging, like when leaders face government hostility for speaking up for those mistreated by the justice system. For those who don’t know Christ, these Christians act as a powerful witness.
