Gabon is filled with untouched tropical rainforests and immense oil wealth. The natural resources have contributed to a relatively wealthy economy, and its small population gives it one of the lowest population densities in Africa. Unlike many of its neighbors, Gabon enjoyed a remarkably peaceful history, entirely avoiding civil war and large-scale armed conflict. But beneath the surface, political tides were turning. Gabon presented itself as a democracy, but the Bongo family ruled for 55 years, and people began to suspect that they rigged the elections. Tensions heightened when a military coup overthrew the government in 2023. The coup’s leader took the reins as transitional president, and two years later, he won the presidential election. Because the government strictly limits freedom of speech, it is difficult to measure true public opinion about the current leadership.
Despite its strong economy, wealth is unevenly distributed, creating a significant gap between the rich and the poor. Gabon struggles with inadequate public services and infrastructure, and around one-third of the population lives below the poverty line. The nation’s education system struggles to provide quality education, and many young people do not graduate from secondary school. Women’s rights have improved since legal reforms in 2021, which provided wives with more legal equality, strengthened laws against gender-based violence, and updated labor laws. Yet women still face significant social inequality and domestic abuse. And although rare, polygamy is legal.
Christianity is the largest religion in Gabon, with around 80 percent identifying as believers. However, ethnic religions still influence the nation, and black magic and witchcraft are commonly practiced — even among Christians. The evangelical Church is steadily growing and maturing, and they are working to provide biblical teaching and discipleship. The nation’s primary language is French, but many other ethnic languages are spoken in Gabon, and most of these do not have complete Scripture translations.
