On the West African coast, Guinea’s flat plains rise into mountains and then descend into savanna and forest. The land is fertile and rich in minerals. Despite these riches, Guinea remains one of the poorest countries in West Africa after decades of corruption, political instability, and poor governance. Today, Guinea is one of the poorest countries in West Africa, with over 50 percent of Guineans living below the international poverty line. Guinea has struggled with a Marxist socialist system and three major government coups (1984, 2008, and 2021), contributing to the stagnant economy and widespread poverty. The military leaders from the 2021 coup still govern the nation today. An election was held in 2025, and the coup leader was elected, although the three main opposition parties were suspended from participating. Political and civil liberties are severely restricted, including freedom of expression and assembly.
Infrastructure, public services, electrical supply, and clean water access are poor. Life expectancy is low and the maternal mortality rate is high, and the healthcare system is ill-equipped to respond to health challenges, and Guinea needs more trained doctors. Nearly half of girls are married before the age of 18, and around 95 percent experience female genital mutilation. Adult literacy is below 50 percent, with female literacy substantially lower than male literacy. Most children do not finish secondary school, and child labor is widespread.
The vast majority of Guineans are Muslim, while only about one percent are evangelical Christians. The people are free to practice any religion, but those who convert from Islam to Christianity often face significant social pressure or ostracism, especially from their own family, which makes evangelism difficult. The evangelical church is growing but has limited resources and trained pastors. Less than 25 percent of the languages spoken have a full Bible translation.
