Pray for Myanmar (Burma)

Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, has one of the world’s largest collections of ancient temples. Over 2,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas, and monasteries are found in the city of Bagan alone. Along with its temples, the nation is rich in natural resources. It is known for the finest jade and world-renowned rubies. Myanmar is the largest country in mainland Southeast Asia and is home to over 130 ethnic groups. Burmans make up about two-thirds of the population. Formerly a British colony, Myanmar gained independence in 1948. From 1962, it was under the control of a military junta.

Today, the military still holds great influence through direct control and widespread repression. The Rohingya people have a long history of suffering at the hands of the Burmese military. They have been denied citizenship since 1982. Hundreds of thousands have left their homes to seek refuge in Bangladesh, where the suffering has continued. Continuous armed conflict and natural disasters have left the nation in shambles. Myanmar is experiencing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. Millions have been displaced, and poverty levels have risen. Myanmar is also one of the world’s largest opium producers, and the production and use of illegal drugs is contributing to HIV transmission.

Though Buddhism is no longer considered the official religion, it is actively promoted by the military regime. Burmese Buddhism mixes in superstition, occult beliefs, and fear of spirits. It is practiced by over 80 percent of the population. The Burmese military dominates and oppresses minority groups, including Christians, who are primarily found in Karen, Kachin, and Chin communities. Persecution is often found in the form of harassment and imprisonment. Still, the Church continues to grow. Foreign missionaries are restricted, yet indigenous believers continue to share the Gospel.
